The Passion of Artemisia by Susan Vreeland - 740 Words

Review of The Passion of Artemisia by Susan Vreeland Both Artemisia’s father and Agostino Tassi, her father’s friend, had spent quite a bit of time teaching her the art of painting. When she was 18, Agostino Tassi, raped Artemisia Gentileschi of Rome during a lesson. When the rapist is tried by a court of the Inquisition, it’s more as if Artemisia is the criminal than Agostino—who gets off free (thanks partly to Artemisia’s father, his own interest in having his painting returned, trumping his daughter’s dignity) while Artemisia, after torture and public humiliation, is left only with a destroyed reputation. With father’s â€Å"help,† however, a husband is found; Artemisia marries Pietro Stiattesi, an artist, and moves to Florence, where her quotidian responsibilities do little to quench her visceral need for painting. She’s happy to be â€Å"in the art center of the world† and soon gives birth to a daughter. Throu gh perseverance and passion she comes to the attention of powerful art patrons. She makes history by becoming the first woman elected to the Accademia dellArte, but makes waves with her husband as; predictably, he is envious of her growing fame as an artist. Pietro reverts to his womanizing ways and their relationship is barely held together by their daughter. Artemisia and her daughter, Palmira leave Pietro behind for a new patron to Genoa, but not before meeting Buonaretti the Younger, being introduced to the Medici court, and growing into a friendship with Galileo.

British Colonialism Essay Research Paper Great BritainBritian free essay sample

British Colonialism Essay, Research Paper Great Britain Britian and the settlements had tensenesss between each other from the clip that the adventuresome 1colonists wanted to subdivision out off from the powerful clasp of Britian. Although Britian did non desire to allow the settlers start at that place ain state they still believed that an extension to their state would be really good to their economic system and power. Britian had Torahs and revenue enhancements on the settlers that seemed unfair to the settlers ; and they were, but they benefited Britian a great trade by widening their power further into the universe. Now that the British had set up their settlement and set down their regulations and ordinances the settlers felt that they were being treated below the belt and believed that they deserved more freedom than the British gave them. After such things as the Sugar Act, Stamp Act and the ferociousness of the Boston Massacre the settlers began to acquire ungratified and endeavoring toward freedom from the higher power that ruled their every twenty-four hours. Protest groups began to lift from the disgruntled people, groups like the Committees of Correspondence. This group gave the people something to believe in. This group clearly told them that they had more rights than the British told them. Inevitably the settlers waged war on the mighty British authorities. This may hold seemed to be a good pick ; the British were unjust, so it seemed that the settlers had a right to declare their independency from Britain. And of class it seems to be a good dicision because the United States is now the most powerful state in the universe. However was it a samarium art Christian dicision, what does the bible say about war and traveling against your ain authorities. In the book of Romans it straight tells the reader that traveling against your authorities it is traveling against Gods will because the authorities was put at that place by God. So if this is the instance the settlers were all pagans and the whole economic system, society and civilization of the United States was based on an unfair iniquitous thought. Yes, that would be true if the Bible did non hold another part specifically managing this kind of state of affairs. In another subdivision of the Bible it reads that a individual must merely follow a authorities if it is non taking the individual off from God. So if a authorities straight disobeys Gods word so it is non right to follow its regulation and instructions. Make the British make this? Yes, the British passed many different Torahs that would travel against the scriptural things like the Quebec Act and the many other unjust revenue enhancements and regulations. When the British killed those work forces during the Boston Massacre, I would state that that was non a really Christian action. If the British did things like this all the clip so the settlers had all the right to run from United kingdoms regulation. Now that the settlers had a good ground to go forth and a good Christian ground. They may non hold gone about go forthing in the most Biblical manner, since engaging war on a state is non a good Christian attitude, but once more in the Bible it has many wars that were fought for Christian things. So if go forthing the British authorities is Christian, so it could be said that the settlers had all the right in the universe to go forth the British and set up the state we know today.

J. Edgar Hoover Essays - English-language Films, Free Essays

J. Edgar Hoover Essays - English-language Films, Free Essays J. Edgar Hoover For nearly half a century J. Edgar Hoover was one of the most powerful officials in the Federal government of the United States. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1924 until his death in 1972, he was the nations chief law enforcement officer. His intimate knowledge of politicians and government operations made him a man to be feared by elected officials, and none of the eight presidents under whom he served dared fire him. J.Edgar Hoover was born on January 1, 1895, in Washington D.C. He attended George Washington University and earned a degree in 1917. In 1919 he became assistant to Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer in the Department of Justice. It was Palmer who instigated the post World War I red scare, an anti-Communist hysteria that led to the deportation of many aliens. Hoover was put in charge of the deportations. When Hoover became director of the Bureau in 1924, he quickly formed an elite force of powerful law enforcement officers. He enhanced the FBIs fame by capturing many gangsters, bank robbers, and other lawbreakers. After World War II he waged a relentless fight against internal subversion. The 1970s often criticized Hoover for his authoritarian methods. He died in Washington, D.C., on May 2, 1972. In the rest of the paper I will explain more in depth of how J. Edgar Hoover rose to power and why he is considered one of the most corrupt men to ever hold a government position. It is not very difficult to figure out the most outstanding characteristic of J. Edgar Hoover. Out of all of his characteristics, the one that truly stands out is that he was extremely powerful. J. Edgar Hoover is the most famous law enforcement officer that the United States has ever known. J. Edgar Hoover began his adult life at the bottom of the ladder with a very limited amount of power. As he grew older and became more experienced his prestige and power skyrocketed. At the height of his prestige and power he was the most famous director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the history of the United States. One factor that helped J. Edgar Hoover gain more power, was that he had many connections with many important people (Summers 29). Another factor that aided J. Edgar Hoover in his rise to power was the knowledge he had about people (Kessler 449-450). This meant that he could control people, or in other words, blackmail them (Summers 38-39). The third reason why J. Edgar Hoover became such a powerful individual is that he was very intelligent and shrewd (Summers 25). These three factors all contributed to forming one of the most powerful men the world has ever known. J. Edgar Hoover knew many important people that held many important positions. Hoover received his first government job thanks to a close family friend by the name of Bill Hitz (Summers 29). Hitz was a judge and considered the President and Supreme Court Justice Brandeis among his close friends (Summers 29). Another individual who helped Edgar along the way was his boss at the Department of Justice, George Michaelson (Summers 29). Bruce Bielaski, a senior official, recalled how - on the trolley to work one day in 1917 - he found himself talking shop with his neighbor, mail room chief George Michaelson (Summers 29). Michaelson dropped the name of a young lawyer he had sorting mail, one of the brightest boys around (Summers 29). You dont need anybody with brains doing that, said Bielaski (Summers 29). If you want him, Michaelson replied, you can have him (Summers 28-29). That conversation on the trolley was a fatal one for America (Summers 29). Bruce Bielaski was Director of the Bureau of Investigation, direct forerunner of what we know now as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (Summers 29). Bielaski would now join the growing list of people that would help Hoover on his quest to power. Bielaski did not forget the young man that his neighbor had recommended - though he did not bring Edgar into the Bureau (Summers 29). Instead he told John Lord OBrian, head of the War Emergency Division, about Edgar (Summers 29). Many

Meeting with an advisor Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Meeting with an advisor - Article Example I now know that I am not the kind of person who can multi-task between a job and class work and have decided to devote all my time & energy towards my education. The second reason for my low GPA is because I was confused between the choice of majoring my studies in Management or Human Resources. My initial choice was HR but now I think my interest is more in Management than HR; this confusion has been responsible for my deteriorating performance. In the meeting with the MHR advisor I had the opportunity to explain my case personally and outline the measures I going take to improve my GPA going forward. I also had the opportunity of having his ear and opinion following my explanation of the issue. The MHR offered very valuable opinion and advice to me with regard to my situation which greatly influenced my final decision to choose Management as my major. The meeting with an MHR advisor was therefore a very valuable

Analysis of Organizational Dialogue Research Paper

Analysis of Organizational Dialogue - Research Paper Example Employee engagement and productivity is one of the strategies that have assumed increasing significance in recent years (Rashid, Asad & Ashraf 2011, p. 98). While employee engagement as a strategy has been assuming increasing significance, its implementation has been experiencing challenges and an increasing number of organizations have significant engagement problems. According to the study by the Gallup Institute (2008, 2009), there are significant engagement problems in the Australian workforce and these results appear to reflect a broader global pattern in the developed economies (Gallup 2009). Leadership plays a major role in engaging the employees in the transformation process within the organization. In general terms, employee engagement is defined as the extent to which employees are motivated to participate and contribute to the achievement of organizational goals and objectives (Cook 2008, p. 37). Engaged employees tend to willfully highly recommend their workplace, have hi gher overall job satisfaction, and favorably rate their pride in their workplace. Leadership communication can greatly impact on employee engagement in any particular organization (Wiley 2010, p. 48). In order to have a clear understanding of how leadership communication impacts employee engagement, this paper will critically analyze the impact that leadership communication has on employee engagement based on contemporary research. The latest research indicates that organization’s leadership and leadership communication have a significant impact on the employees’ engagement levels and their overall opinion about the organization (Eisenberg, Goodall & Tretheway 2009, p. 26). The type of leadership adopted by an organization is defined by the style of leadership communication. Hackman and Johnson (2009, p. 11) define leadership as a form of human communication that transitions behaviors and attitudes to focus on collective shared needs and goals. This definition indicate s how fundamental leadership in general and leadership communication, in particular, is in employee engagement (Gerard & Ellinor 2001, p. 59). Leadership communication impacts on how employee commits themselves to their roles and to the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of their organization (Wiley 2010, p. 47). The Kenexa Research Institute (KRI) observes that their latest results on the effectiveness of leadership in an organization are 51% globally. It states that results indicate that employees in India, Brazil, and United States reported the highest ratings of leadership effectiveness, at 69%, 59% and 54% respectively (Rashid, Asad & Ashraf 2011, p. 101). Leadership effectiveness is measured by evaluating how organization leadership gains the confidence of employees through their communications, actions, and decisions, and how leadership keeps employees informed about company direction, as well as how they are seen to having the ability to deal with the organizationâ€℠¢s challenges (Cook 2008, p. 40). The research by KRI is crucial in critically analyzing the impact that leadership communication has on employee engagement. In evaluating leadership effectiveness, one of the critical aspects that are evaluated is how leadership communication impacts on the employees’ commitment towards achieving organizational goals and objectives (Dixon 1998, p. 15).

Biology Essay Example for Free

Biology Essay The flow of genetic information from DNA to protein in eukaryotic cells is called the central dogma of biology. The role of RNA in protein synthesis is extremely important as protein synthesis could not occur without RNA. Three forms of RNA exist solely to create proteins. Through a process known as translation, RNA constructs the proteins necessary to sustain life. Spliceosomes Process pre-mRNA by splicing out intronic nucleic acids producing mRNA which is then translated to protein in ribosomes. Codons are three letter codes eg: AUG which codes for metheonine. Likewise there are many codons which code for different amino acids. Ribosomes bind to the mature mRNA at an AUG site and, for each codon (3 mRNA nucleic acids), a tRNA brings an amino acid for the translation, until the stop codon where the newly synthesized polypeptide is released in its primary structure. b) A eukaryotic cell has a nucleus that separates the processes of transcription and translation. Eukaryotic transcription occurs within the nucleus where DNA is packaged into nucleosomes nd higher order chromatin structures. Translation is the process by which messenger RNA is translated into proteins in eukaryotes. c) Rabies is an RNA virus, so it deviates from the central dogma by the fact that it is storing its genetic information in RNA instead of DNA. Eukaryotic cells use RNA as well, but only use it for an intermediate step when turning genetic information into protein. RNA is a much less stable molecule than DNA so it is not very good for holding the large amounts of DNA typically seen in Eukaryotic cells.
